Zanzibar, together with the Mafia Island, is often referred to as the Spice Islands. Cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and black pepper are among the many spices they are commonly cultivated in the archipelago.
Though heavily visited by tourists, I definitely recommend doing a spice tour if you make it to Zanzibar. A tour guide will walk you through a spice farm, pointing out various plants that seem quite ordinary, until you smell or taste them. The tour includes lunch, which is a deliciously prepared
community meal using the fresh herbs and spices from the farms. A farm hand will gladly clamor up a tree to fetch a few fresh coconuts; ours even provided a little acrobatic entertainment, no doubt to try and boost his tips. Tours will often include a visit to the Mangapwani Caves (see next post), or other beaches in the area if desired.
